Sealed patterns, marked with a red wax seal and kept in the Tower, survive from the 18th century onwards. Infantry swords were largely discarded but patterns were provided for troopers’ cavalry swords and weapons for specialist bodies. Officers still carried privately purchased weapons that conformed to Ordnance patterns. Until about 1710, during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), the Board of Ordnance had usually bought complete weapons from private contractors. Then it began to place separate contracts for the different stages of manufacture and assembly, so that it had greater control. Most gun barrels and locks were made in and around Birmingham.

London gun-makers, mostly in the Minories near the Tower, added the stocks and completed the weapons. The Tower was the central depot. The Ordnance provided the contractors with detailed specifications, including specimens or patterns, and inspected and proved (tested) their work at the Tower, where it was then stamped or engraved with the Ordnance mark. During the Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815) such was the demand for weapons for Britain and her allies that an organisation similar to the Tower’s was set up in Birmingham, for the complete manufacture and proving of weapons. In London the Ordnance itself took on the production and assembly of components, with a factory on Tower Wharf as well as at Lewisham.

After the war all these operations closed down, but the Ordnance then set up a new factory at Enfield Lock. The Board constantly considered ideas for new or improved military weapons. But, perhaps surprisingly, it was the sportsman, rather than the soldier or inventor, who largely inspired the innovations which were to transform military firearms by the mid 19th century. These included the percussion cap, a cylindrical copper cap containing explosive fulminate that was detonated by a hammer. The Rev. Alexander Forsyth experimented with fulminate in the Tower in 1806, but the man usually credited with the invention of the percussion cap is an English artist, Joshua Shaw. In 1839 the Board finally decided to convert weapons in store to Pattern 1839 percussion muskets for Regiments of the Line, but in 1841 a fire at the Tower destroyed vast quantities of flintlocks, which speeded up the introduction of the new percussion firearms.

Other innovations included rifling the barrel (cutting a spiral groove inside to make a bullet spin for truer aim) and breech-loading. The Ordnance, however, was wary of change; a soldier in the heat of battle needed a firearm that was robust and reliable. It was not until 1867 that the breech-loading rifle, in the form of the Snider, became standard issue, twelve years after the functions of the Board of Ordnance were taken over by the War Department.

West Point exists to educate and train Cadets who are commissioned as Officers in the US Army upon Graduation. The commitment is for a total of 8 years, 5 of which are on active duty and 3 in the Reserves if you choose not to continue on active duty. A very few graduates may select commissioning in other services, primarily where one of their parents has served a career in another service.

The primary options for Army service are the choice of branch of service. You choose that at the beginning of your senior year. What are your army career options? After graduating from West Point, you will be commissioned in one of several Army branches. You may want a combat arms branch such as Infantry, Field Artillery, Armor, Air Defense Artillery, Aviation or Combat Engineers. You also may choose a combat support branch such as Signal, Military Police, Chemical or Military Intelligence.

You may also want to choose one of the combat service support branches such as Ordnance, Quartermaster, Transportation, Adjutant General or Finance. Opportunities are also available for the Medical Service Corps or the Judge Advocate General Corps later in your service career. You will advance to positions of greater responsibility in each branch based on your abilities.

West Point is looking for well rounded young men and women who want to serve as commissioned officers in the US Army. By well rounded I mean good students, good athletes, and good leaders. The focus is on service in the Army rather than on the college education part.

Now to answer your specific questions. Commissioned officers serve as leaders of the wonderful young men and women in our Army today. The military is organized into branches of service that are either directly involved on the front lines (infantry, armor, field artillery, etc) or operate in support roles (signal, ordnance, intelligence, aviation, etc.) I would go to the Army’s web site and check it out thoroughly.

As for percentage rates for West Point, there are two interesting numbers. The first is the percentage rate of acceptance of offers of admission. In recent years (since 9/11) the percentage rate has been steady at about 85%. That is the highest acceptance rate of any college or university in the nation, topping Harvard, Princeton and all the rest. This says that those who apply to West Point know what they are doing and are very serious about it.

The second percentage rate of interest is the graduation rate. In recent years the graduation rate has held steady between 75% and 80% of those who enter graduate, in four years. The national average is 50% in SIX years.

If you chose not to stay beyond your five year active duty commitment the world is open to you. Experienced young Army officers are in great demand everywhere in our business world and they have no problems supporting themselves or their families.

Finally, to answer your question about the potential for playing a professional sport following graduation. The Department of Defense has recently adopted a policy where a small number of Service Academy Graduates (not just West Point) to be released early from their active duty obligation to play professional sports. They do have to pay back the cost of their education (several hundred thousand $$) and serve in the Army Reserves in a recruiting role, but today there is a viable option for elite level athletes.

If you work for what you want then some day you will get it and when you do you will look back on your days at West Point and thank them for giving you the change to become something better to do something better with you life.

While the US Army structure is based on the British military tradition, the History of Army Officers dates back to the 18th century. The categorisation of Privates and Commissioned Officers required distinction among the ranks, which called for the introduction of badges of distinction – this was followed up with the introduction of two stars for major generals and one star for brigadier generals, in 1780. The commissioned officers of the Army of United States were called the “General of the Armies of the United States”. By 1798, three stars were introduced to indicate Lieutenant Generals, while four stars were awarded to the rank of General, in 1866.

The “General and Commander-in-chief of the Army of the United Colonies” appointed in 1775 was George Washington, on the instance of the Revolutionary War, holding his post till 1783 under a Commission. George Washington was supposed to have been conferred the “Commander of the Army of the United States” and his position of “Lieutenant General” was to be abolished, but George Washington died while still under the commission of Lieutenant General.

By 1866, the title of the “General of the Army of the United States” was established and was awarded to General Ulysses S Grant, who was succeeded by William T Sherman as the General of the Army of the United States, in 1869. However, he was the last to hold the position, as the position was discontinued on the death of Sherman. The rank of Lieutenant General was discontinued, which was merged with the position of the General of
Army, with Lieutenant General Philip H Sheridan taking up the position. However, the office was discontinued with the death of Sheridan.

It was after the First World War that the title of the General of Armies was introduced. The only person to hold the rank of the General of the Armies was General Pershing. By 1944, General of the Army was established, with the appointment of General George Marshall, General Douglas MacArthur, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and General Henry H. Arnold.

However, the General of the Army is deemed to be next in line in terms of rankings, to the general of the Armies, and the third to follow was the General. Colonels of the Army were identified with red or pink colored cockades in their hats as early as in 1775, and eagles were introduced in 1829 as a mark of identifying colonels. It was in 1935 that the leaf was established to mark Lieutenant Colonels and Majors.

War can be defined as conflict, fighting or hostilities between two countries or interest groups. You fight wars to protect your interests or sovereignty. When you are putting together a nation or any entity for that matter, it is taken for granted that you should also put in place the machinery to protect it, otherwise you will wake up to see that your enemies have overran the whole place. I believe this is the reason why it is wisely said that if you want peace, you have to prepare for war. And I think that was what helped the wisest man ever-lived – Solomon. He was so wealthy, powerful, connected (humanly and divinely), wise, blessed, militarily armed and prepared that no enemy dared to attack him. He had a very peaceful and prosperous reign. It was not that everybody loved him, but his strength and capability were enormous. He was well prepared for any eventuality. We will talk about these later. You are in a war!

Our God is a warrior and we must see things the way He sees them. We must go closer to Him and see the way He fights His battles, and also learn how to allow Him lead us through the war called life. We must not take anything for granted. Yes, life is war, and as in every war there are always many battles to fight. When you win one, then you prepare or go over to the next. Until you win the entire war. Have you noticed that even the bible is a book of war? It is a record of so many battles between the kingdom of God and that of Satan. Between righteousness and unrighteousness. It started with a battle and ended with another. And in-between, almost every book shows this battle of two kingdoms.

In Genesis chapter one, there was a battle that threw the whole earth into a chaotic state. It was left empty, formless and in darkness, before God started working again. It was a battle between the angels loyal to God and the angelic rebels led by Satan himself. In the book of Revelation (the last book of the bible), is just full of the last battles that will culminate to the battle of Gog and Magog. After this, Satan will be cast into the lake of fire, and shall be tormented day and night forever. He knows this and it makes him afraid and very sick everyday. This is why he is desperate in everything he does.

Now, you must wake up everyday with the consciousness that you are in a war. The battle fields are your life, your health, your position, family, faith, your calling, your business, etc. All these are the battle fronts, but the war is between the kingdom of light and that of darkness for your destiny and the destiny of your nation. Are you prepared this war? You just have to because it is a fact of life. Life is warfare. Now, let’s go back to King Solomon and see how he prepared himself and Israel for this war.

Solomon
Immediately Solomon took over after the death of his father as the king of Israel, he summoned all the generals, military commanders, judges, political and clan leaders and led them to the presence of the LORD. They went to the hill at Gibeon where God’s Tabernacle was located. When they gathered in front of the Tabernacle, Solomon quickly went up to the bronze altar in the LORD’s presence and sacrificed a thousand burnt offerings on it. And this singular action sparked off a new phase of relationship for the both. God visited Solomon that same night and asked him, “What do you want? Ask and I will give it to you. Wonderful!

Solomon promptly asked Him for wisdom and knowledge to rule Israel properly. This further pleased God and He decided to embarrass Solomon with all His blessings. God gave him wisdom and knowledge as he asked, and also added riches, wealth and honour. Gold and silver became like stones in Jerusalem. His empire extended to the nations around Euphrates River to the land of the philistines and the border of Egypt. All these kings (and others from all parts of the world) regularly brought gifts of gold, silver, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, cattle, etc, to him. Solomon became the wisest, richest, most influential and most famous king on earth. With this kind of resources, he went ahead to build a very strong military force. He had 1,400 chariots (tanks) and 12,000 horses. These troops were strategically stationed in the cities and some brought into Jerusalem to provide personal security to the king. Wow! So King Solomon was also a military strategist? Now, why won’t this king enjoy a whopping 40 years of peaceful and prosperous reign?? Attempting to attack him or his kingdom would have been a suicidal mission for anybody or nation.

How did this man achieve this level of security and success? First, in humility, he acknowledged God; the maker and controller of all things. He was honest in his dealing with God, and also provoked Him with his massive sacrifice and sincere love for the people. He also rightly and timely applied the wisdom God gave to him. Beginning from the first, immediately he got on the throne, he gathered his lieutenants and headed for the presence of God. He handed over himself and his kingdom to God. Sure, he had seen how his father related to the God of Israel and the blessing and security that followed him. His father died of ripe old age, enjoyed long life, wealth and honour. So, he decided to go the same proven way. Security, victory and good success are all in the hands of God. When you acknowledge Him in all your ways, He will direct you paths, and give you security in all areas of your life. And nobody, no power or situation shall be able to defeat or destroy you. Not just Solomon, other war veterans in the bible knew this principle. Ask Abraham, David, Joshua, Jehoshaphat, etc. When you give God His place, He will give you a place. To be ready to win the current war, you must give Him the first place in your life, and in that situation. If you fail, then, you have only prepared to be defeated and disgraced.
